Oregon Law Forces Commercial Buildings to Go Green

Oregon has long been a leader in the country when it comes to green energy issues. The state now has a new law that will force commercial buildings to go green in a big way.

Many states talk about alternative energy and green building goals, but few really follow up with code requirements that actually incorporate the concepts. This isn't necessarily an indictment of the politicians as the current economic environment is not exactly making changes easy. Regardless, the concept of green building is more a voluntary initiative than one that is required.

Oregon is aiming to change this with the 2010 Oregon Energy Efficiency Specialty Code. The code goes into effect on July 1, 2010. It applies to new commercial buildings constructed after that date. The goal of the new code section is to create a 15 percent saving in energy use on all new commercial buildings.

So, how exactly do the new code provisions achieve this goal? The code focuses on three specific areas. The first is in the shell of the building. The code requires increased insulation and upgraded windows to facilitate a more efficient thermal envelope. The second area is the lighting systems, where an automated system will be required that makes for more efficient energy usage. The final area is the mechanical devices in the buildings ranging from heaters to air conditioners and so on. The new code calls for the use of more energy efficient models.

Will the Oregon codes make a difference in the energy debate? Yes. The requirement of increased energy efficiency is not a hurdle for businesses so long as all are required to meet the threshold. Given the fact that energy efficiency will ultimately save them money in the long run, it looks like a win-win in many different ways.

They say the trends in the country move from the west across the rest of the nation. Perhaps Oregon is adding to that legacy once again with the new green building codes for commercial buildings.
