Taipei 101 To Be Tallest Green Building In The World

At one time, Taipei 101 was the tallest building in the world. Now, Taipei 101 is aiming to be the world’s tallest green building at a 508 meters in height.

The old cliché goes when given lemons, make lemonade. I’ve always thought it a bit daft, but the powers that be at Taipei 101 seem to be taking it to heart. The world has long held a competition to see who could build the tallest building in the world. Countries have traded the title for years with the rate of change being particularly high before the recent world wide recession.

Taipei 101 was one of the champs. Located in Taipei, Taiwan, the building held the title of tallest building for three total years. With the title taken away from it, the owners have been looking for some new claim to fame. They seem to have found it. The company has applied for a green building certification per the United States LEED standards.

Representatives of the building suggest it was originally designed with green building ideals in mind. The building has double pane windows for better insulation, a recycled water program and automated climate control systems. The owners further intend to spend millions more in the coming year to upgrade to basic green standards for lighting, waste removal and so on in concert with green building consultants.

So, what are we to make of this? Frankly, it should be applauded. Asia is a mix of attitudes on the subject of green building. While every country pays lip service to the topic, some implement the idea while others clearly do not. The idea that the tallest building in Asia might soon be deemed a green building is a positive move that may spur others to get more serious about the issue, particularly China.
